Thank God That I'm Alive

I saw this on Pinterest a couple of days ago and it has stuck with me ever since. At the time, I automatically thought to myself, "Thank God I thank God every night for my family and friends, our cozy house, our jobs we love, and our wonderful life." Since then, it has popped up in my thoughts here and there but really hit me as I was driving home tonight.

My friend and I went to see the movie version of The Help tonight. I loved the book (I listened to it on audio, which I think was fantastic) and I wasn't sure how I would like the movie but, in this case, it is definitely a movie that did the book justice, and maybe even moreso in a sense. The movie really brought the book to life for me. Sometimes it's hard for me to visualize when I'm reading, especially when the book is set in the past. The Help is well written and I actually did visualize pretty much what I saw in the movie but it still made it so much more real for me.

After the movie, my friend and I talked about how horrible the situation was in the south for African American people and how horribly they were treated. As we were talking about this, my friend reminded me of how close the Civil Rights movement was in terms of history. It was the 1960's. In the whole history of the United States, let alone the world, the 1960's was not that long ago. When I took U.S. History in high school the class barely even made it to the 1960's (which is a shame...).

I got into my car and headed home. And then I was overcome with the feeling of just how great my life is. My life is not perfect: the laundry in my hamper is overflowing and my 1-year-old thinks it's funny to hit me when he's mad...and so many other complaints I could type BUT my life is my life and no matter what is happening, I know that I still have a countless things to be thankful and happy for in my life.

This is when the tears just careened down my cheeks. I thought about the loneliness Ms. Celia feels. I thought about how horrible Hilly is and the hatred and misunderstanding she represents. I thought about sweet Mae Mobley. I thought about the way people treated other people during that time period...and how some of that hatred still exists today. You can imagine how much more blubbery I got as I realized that by the time I made it home to write this post it would be September 11th.

It makes me sad that people treat other people as poorly as they do sometimes. It also makes me proud to know that I recognize this and hope I can be someone who shows compassion and respect for others. I can teach my kids how to be kind to other people. I can do my best to express to family, friends, and strangers that I value them. I may be just one little person in this giant world, but that doesn't mean I can't make a difference in someone's life.

Thank God for everything in my life - the good and the bad. The tough parts of life help me appreciate the great parts of life. September 11th is a perfect example of how life can change in an instant and also of how people can come together and support each other.

I am extremely thankful for this blog. I'm glad I get to share my perspective on life. Whether people read this or not, it's here, and hopefully it is reaching at least one person who gets something out of reading what I have to say. I haven't updated this blog since April and a post was looooooong overdue. I promise to post more often - for myself and for my kiddos. I realize how much this is a chronicle and celebration of their lives as much as it is about me. Thank you to everyone who still reads this blog! I appreciate you!

I say that everyday needs to be a day of thanksgiving. Stop and think about what you are thankful for. Revel in the minute and the grandiose. Because what if it's all gone tomorrow?

Operation Giving Part Four

It was a kind of slow week for giving...but I did make this cute pencil holder for one of the teachers I am mentoring this year.  Didn't it turn out cute?

Mallrats Strike Again!

This was one of the most fun mall nights...except that we were missing Maddy's daddy, Marc...we had a huge turnout.  Besides the Garneau's and the Benassi's, it was our family plus my parents, Silvia's parents, and Mamita.  We had fun playing in the play area and then made our way up to the food court for dinner as usual.  Of course, we did some dancing, and then were off to Barnes and Noble for books and the train table.  Fun! (AH!  Sorry about the blue underlining!)

Jordan and Maddy riding in the blue car!
Jordan and Alex cruising in the red car!
Here we are!  It was so much fun to have everyone with us for dinner!
Not to be forgotten!  Maddy helped me take this beautiful picture of Kathy...you can see her finger in the bottom left corner!
Jen and Maddy, a self portrait.
Dancing, yeah!

Jordan's 2nd Train Ride!

Since we had the weekend pass for the train we decided to go again today.  This time Grandma Sue and Bubba came with us.  We went to Glenview this time and ate breakfast at Egg Harbor and then came back.  Jordan really likes the train.  He has fun waiting for it to come and saying, "ding, ding, ding" when it starts to get close to the station.  We'll definitely be doing this again...especially as it gets warmer.  (Oh, can it please get warmer...now!?!)                                                                                                                                                                                                                Daddy, Jordan, Grandma Sue, and Bubba on the train!  This was Bubba first time ever on a train!  It was fun!

Hanging with the G-People!

Because we decided to go to the Bulls game last night, my mom picked up Jordan and took him to their house.  We already had plans to go over to our friends' house tonight so Jordan will be there again tonight.  Chad had a basketball game to coach so I picked up my grandma and took him over to my parents' house so she could hang out with them and Jordan...and so I could see my munchkin for at least a little bit.  It was fun when I walked in and he shouted, "Mommy!"  I love that!  Chad felt awful that he couldn't go see him and Jordan was asking about him.  It's so sweet.  Jordan and Papa had a whole train set set up in the living room.  It was fun!

We had a nice soup lunch: broccoli cheese soup and pea soup.  Yum!

Operation Giving Part Two

I'm not sure what happened to my pictures but I was trying to be creative and they went all funky on me!  You can see them at least...they're just all over the place!

I started off the week giving some of these homemade chocolate covered pretzels...with sprinkles!

I had these two books that I only read once that I passed along to a librarian at one of my schools.

Our book club was at Cheesecake Factory this month so I brought Chad a slice of Fresh Strawberry Cheesecake.  (I'm not sure this counts because he asked me to bring him a slice, but I was kind of already thinking I would bring him a slice...and I did use my own money to buy it, so...)

I also gave out some bookmarks that I sewed a while ago...but I realized I didn't take a picture!  They were really cute...at least I thought they were!  They were cotton fabric pieces sewn together.  The colors were white, pink, yellow, and red, and I appliqued red felt hearts on them.  I'm making them sound way more complicated than they were to make!

This was the most fun and completely surprising even to me...on Saturday I met my mom, grandma, and aunt at the mall to do some shopping (oh! totally part of my more-family-time resolution!) and I stopped at Baskin Robbins to get some ice cream.  They had soft serve cones for only 59 cents, so I decided to get one of those.  The guy in front of my ordered two soft serve cones for 59 cents and then upgraded his cone to a chocolate-dipped cone with sprinkles.  Yum!  When he pulled out his credit card the cashier told him they only take cash.  The dude was bummed because he didn't have any cash and was about to go see if his friend had any cash when I decided, hey!  I can pay for his ice cream!  It was completely random and nothing like that has ever happened to me before but it was so fun to say I would pay for his ice creams.  He, of course, didn't want to have me pay for his ice cream, but I insisted...it was only a few dollars.
I found this cute sweatshirt to send
to my cousin's daughter in Guatemala.  I just happened to pass it in Target and I thought it was so cute. I love the girly stuff!

Christmas...again

We celebrated our final Christmas celebration on Friday night with my brother's family.  We all met up at my parent's house and stayed over night.  It was a short visit, but fun.  The kids were dying to open presents!  It was fun.  We ate pizza and then hung out.  Kandi and I did some "mom" bonding time and the boys (and Jacquie) did a lot of Wii playing in the basement.  Jordan had fun racing around after his cousins, Wyatt and Sawyer.

Jordan, Eric, Sawyer, and Wyatt opening presents!
What'd you get, Jordan!?
Sawyer loves Thomas!
Jane helped Jordan with some of his presents.
Nothing like watching Saturday morning cartoons!  Sawyer, Wyatt, and Jordan.

Operation Giving Part One

This could get to be a lengthy list of giving posts...but I'm excited to share what I gave last week in honor of one of my New Year's resolutions!

Notes to my students about how they are doing and how they can improve.
North Pole S'mores for Jordy to take and share with his friends at Patty's.
Homemade fish for my nephews with a fishing rod that is not pictured.  We gave them other Christmas gifts, but this was was from the heart and I was so proud of it!  (Unfortunately, my brilliant magnet idea didn't really work and I'm going to have to send them some stuff to tweak the fishies so they will be catch-able!)
An "I *heart* EC" bookmark for one of my Twilight-loving friends.

Poor Jordan

Poor Jordan was subjected to shopping at Vera Bradley and then eating dinner at Panera with mom and Aunt Jacquie.  Poor, poor Jordan.  We thought we were going to be quick at Vera Bradley's but it's soooo hard to decide once you get in there!  Panera was great though and we had a nice dinner.  Jordan loves Panera's chicken noodle soup!  We tried to take our picture...it kind of worked!
